The online master’s in management specialization in homeland security management at University of Maryland Global Campus will prepare you for professional positions concerned with protecting the country against natural and human-made domestic and international threats such as terrorism, transnational crime, and cybercrime. In this program, you will learn about maintaining cybersecurity, transportation security, intelligence, civil liberties, emerging technology integration, international engagement, and private-sector partnerships and collaboration. You’ll attain the requisite knowledge and skills necessary for professional homeland security positions involving cybersecurity, risk and threat assessments, the design and management of operational disaster relief recovery, and the development of strategies essential to the protection of individuals, facilities, and critical infrastructure.

Course Sequencing

  • (6 Credits, MGMT 630) (or (3 Credits, MGMT 610) must be taken within the first 6 credits.
  • (3 Credits, MGMT 640) should not be attempted simultaneously with (3 Credits, MGMT 650).
  • (3 Credits, HSMN 610) must be taken as one of the first two specialization courses.
  • (3 Credits, HSMN 670) must be taken in your last semester.
  • You must complete 24 credits of program coursework, including all core courses, before enrolling in (3 Credits, HSMN 670).

Accelerated Pathway

If you completed your undergraduate degree at UMGC with coursework in homeland security, an accelerated pathway between UMGC undergraduate and graduate programs in homeland security allows you to reduce your total coursework for a related graduate degree by up to 6 credits.

The following undergraduate-to-graduate course substitutions will be accepted for a maximum of 6 credits in our master's degree program in management with a homeland security management specialization or information technology with a homeland security management specialization.

  • Introduction to Homeland Security
    (3 Credits, HMLS 302) substitutes for Concepts in Homeland Security
    (3 Credits, HSMN 610)
  • Infrastructure in Homeland Security
    (3 Credits, HMLS 408) substitutes for Critical Infrastructures
    (3 Credits, HSMN 625)

The substitutions listed above are the only ones possible. Note that a minimum grade of B must be earned in each undergraduate course for the credits to be accepted at the graduate level.

Experience Recommended for Success in the Program

If you lack a recent background in finance or accounting, you should take UCSP 620 before (3 Credits, MGMT 640). If you lack a recent background in statistics, you should take UCSP 630 before (3 Credits, MGMT 650). Taking UCSP 605 is recommended to improve writing skills.
