Irish novelists, playwrights, and poets have forged one of the greatest bodies of literature in the English language. Dublin, UNESCO city of literature, has enchanted Nobel laureates and inspired countless works of art. 

Discover a city and a national literature that influences and resonates to this day. In this course, you will delve into the rich literature and history of 19th and 20th-century Ireland by visiting its capital museums, coastal towns, and famous theaters.

Topics include: 

  • Nobel laureates W.B. Yeats, James Joyce, Seamus Heaney 
  • The Great Hunger and Colonialism
  • Revolutionary Irish women 
  • The 1916 Easter Rising

May apply toward upper-level credit for the English or humanities major, the general education requirements in arts and humanities, or electives. Prerequisite: WRTG 112 Introduction to Academic Writing II. Please check with a UMGC advisor for more information.
