Spanish for Business & the Professions
Undergraduate Certificate

These program requirements are for students who enroll in the 2022-2023 academic year.


Through the undergraduate certificate program in Spanish for business and the professions at University of Maryland Global Campus, you'll benefit from a combination of language and professional study that will build a foundation to enhance your résumé and prepare you to work and communicate in a variety of Spanish-speaking environments. This program is ideal for those who are in a professional or social setting where Spanish is often spoken.

This certificate is not intended for students who already have native or near-native ability in Spanish. Students with prior experience in the Spanish language should e-mail languages@umgc.edu to inquire about a placement test.

Program Highlights
  • Practice Spanish: Speak, read, write, and comprehend the Spanish language in your regular coursework.
  • Learn by speaking: Apply Spanish language to a variety of real-life social situations in a culturally appropriate way.
  • Increase cultural awareness: Gain an understanding of an appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures.
  • Interact in business: Communicate in a business environment about management, HR, and cultural issues.
  • Study global business: Read about and discuss aspects of the business world in the United States, Spain, and Latin America.
Required Courses
  • Four courses in intermediate or upper-level Spanish chosen from the following:
    • (3 Credits, SPAN 211)
    • (3 Credits, SPAN 212)        
    • Any 300- or 400-level SPAN courses taught in Spanish
  •  One of the following 4-credit courses in Spanish:
    • (4 Credits, SPAN 418)
    • (4 Credits, SPAN 419)
  • Note: (3 Credits, SPAN 112) is a prerequisite course for 200-level courses that count toward the certificate, and as such, does not count toward the 16-credit total for this program.
        
Career Preparation

This program is designed to help you improve your communication skills for job markets both inside and beyond the United States.

Experience Recommended for Success in the Program

This program is ideal for military servicemembers as well as those who are in a professional or social setting where Spanish is often spoken.
