Elementary French I
FREN 111 | 3 Credits
Course Desc: For online sections, microphone, speakers, and occasional synchronous work required. (Not open to native speakers of French; assumes no prior knowledge of French. Students with prior experience with the French language should take a placement test to assess appropriate level.) An introduction to the French language. The objective is to listen to, speak, read, and write elementary French in concrete, real-life situations and in culturally appropriate ways. Practice in pronunciation is provided. The diverse language and culture of the French-speaking world is also explored. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: FREN 101 or FREN 111.
Elementary French II
FREN 112 | 3 Credits
Course Desc: (Not open to native speakers of French.) Prerequisite: FREN 111 or appropriate score on a placement test. A continued introduction to the French language. The objective is to listen to, speak, read, and write French in concrete, real-life situations related to oneself and others in culturally appropriate ways. Practice in speaking and listening is provided. The diverse language and culture of the French-speaking world is explored. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: FREN 102 or FREN 112.
Intermediate French I
FREN 211 | 3 Credits
Course Desc: Prerequisite: FREN 112. Further development of skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French. French culture, history, current events, and geography provide the context for instruction in grammatical structures, vocabulary, pronunciation, and composition. Focus is on acquiring the skills necessary to communicate with native French speakers orally and in writing at an intermediate level. Class is conducted primarily in French. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: FREN 114, FREN 201, or FREN 211.
Intermediate French II
FREN 212 | 3 Credits
Course Desc: (Serves as preparation for upper-level courses in French language, culture, and literature.) Prerequisite: FREN 211. Improvement of skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French. French culture, history, current events, and geography provide the context for instruction in grammatical structures, vocabulary, pronunciation, and composition. Focus is on acquiring the skills necessary to communicate with native French speakers orally and in writing at an advanced intermediate level. Class is conducted almost entirely in French. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: FREN 115, FREN 202, or FREN 212.
Advanced Conversation I
FREN 311 | 3 Credits
Course Desc: Prerequisite: FREN 212 or consent of the faculty member. Training in understanding French without being confused by syntactical structures. Emphasis is on conversing in a spontaneous and idiomatic manner.
